Charitable Giving Strategies

  • Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): A flexible tool allowing donors to contribute appreciated assets for an immediate tax deduction and then recommend grants to qualified charities over time. Funds in the DAF grow tax-free.

With a fund at Hudson Community Foundation (HCF), advisors can manage the charitable assets on their preferred platform at any amount. Assets stay under their management. You can provide your clients with the consistent investment advice they expect. We are your partner in charitable giving!

  • Direct Bequests/Beneficiary Designations: Naming a charity as a direct beneficiary in a will, trust, or on a retirement account (like an IRA or 401(k)) provides an unlimited estate tax deduction for the value of the gift. Retirement accounts are ideal for this, as charities are tax-exempt and do not pay the income tax that individual heirs would on distributions.

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs): For individuals age 70½ or older, a QCD allows a direct transfer of up to $108,000 annually from an IRA to a qualified charity. This amount is excluded from taxable income and counts toward the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD.

  • Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs): The donor contributes appreciated assets to a CRT and receives an income stream (annuity) for a set period. When the term ends, the remaining assets go to the named charity. The donor receives a partial tax deduction upfront.

Hudson Community Foundation makes arranging a gifts for charitable clients as easy as possible, and we strive to honor the intentions of our donors. See below for helpful fund information:

  • Donor-advised fund – This type of fund is a dedicated account for charitable giving. When making a contribution to a charity that sponsors a donor-advised fund program, like Hudson Community Foundation, donors are eligible for an immediate tax deduction. Donors recommend grants over time to any IRS-qualified public charity and invest the funds for tax-free growth. Donor-advised funds provide many benefits for organizing and planning giving, but they also offer advantages in terms of income, capital gains and estate taxes. In some cases, these benefits are more advantageous than those from contributing to a private foundation.

  • Estate Gifts: If one of your clients arranges an estate gift for the benefit of Hudson Community Foundation, we would very much appreciate knowing about the gift, both so we can express our sincere gratitude and – as noted above – so we can make sure we will be able to fulfill the donor’s wishes. Of course, we respect the fact that in some cases donors prefer to remain anonymous. If you are willing to serve as an intermediary, your client can share information about his or her plans without divulging his or her identity.
